NHS Trust Admits to Unnecessary Mastectomies for Twenty Women

An NHS trust in County Durham has revealed that twenty women underwent unnecessary mastectomies, highlighting serious failures in breast cancer treatment. This shocking admission follows a broader investigation into the County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust (CDDFT), where hundreds of patients have reportedly suffered harm. The trust is now reviewing cases dating back to 2015, which could involve up to 10,000 medical records, raising concerns about the adequacy of patient care and informed consent.

The implications of these revelations extend beyond individual cases. Many women are left grappling with the psychological and physical consequences of their treatment, feeling betrayed by a system they trusted. The trust’s internal review has already identified significant harm in over 300 cases, including missed or delayed cancer diagnoses, which could have dire consequences for patient outcomes.

As the National Crime Agency investigates potential criminal offences, the trust’s leadership has acknowledged a conflict of interest in its previous outsourcing arrangements. This raises questions about the integrity of clinical standards and the prioritisation of profit over patient care.

The situation has sparked calls for a public inquiry, as affected women seek accountability and assurance that such failures will not be repeated. The trust’s commitment to transparency and improvement will be crucial in restoring public confidence in NHS services.
