Northern Ireland Faces Driving Test Backlog Amid Rising Demand

Northern Ireland is experiencing a significant backlog in driving tests, with demand surging to record levels. The Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) reported a 13% increase in applications from February to June this year compared to the same period in 2022. To address this, the DVA is recruiting more examiners and expanding test availability to Sundays and bank holidays.

Learner drivers are feeling the pressure, as many face waits of up to 12 weeks for a test. Parents like Kerryann Barr are concerned about the additional travel required when booking tests at distant centres, which can lead to extra lessons and increased costs. This situation is exacerbated by the upcoming introduction of graduated driver licensing (GDL) rules in October, which may push more learners to complete their tests sooner.

The DFI has noted that while waiting times are high, they are comparable to other centres across Northern Ireland. In June alone, a record 6,844 tests were conducted, highlighting the urgent need for more examiners to keep pace with demand. The DVA aims to alleviate these pressures by increasing capacity and improving access to driving tests.

As the GDL rules come into effect, learner drivers will have until March 2027 to pass their tests before facing stricter regulations. This looming deadline could further intensify the rush for driving tests, impacting both the learners’ readiness and the overall testing process in Northern Ireland.
