New Oil Pipeline Deal Between Turkiye and Iraq: What It Means

Turkiye and Iraq have renewed a crucial one-year oil pipeline agreement, ensuring the flow of 750,000 barrels of crude oil daily through the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline. This deal, reached following a high-level meeting, is significant as it reinforces Iraq’s only stable oil export route to the Mediterranean amidst ongoing regional tensions.

The agreement comes at a time when the global oil market is facing challenges, particularly after disruptions caused by military actions in the region. Iraq’s oil exports have suffered a dramatic decline, with revenues plummeting as sanctions and military strikes impact traditional shipping routes, particularly through the Gulf.

This renewed commitment not only aims to stabilize Iraq’s export economy but also reflects Turkiye’s strategic interests in securing energy supplies. As both nations work towards a longer-term agreement, the current arrangement may serve as a temporary solution while addressing broader issues of regional cooperation in energy and other sectors.

The pipeline’s current capacity usage is below optimal levels, raising concerns about the stability of oil flows. However, this deal could set the stage for expanding partnerships in oil and beyond, signalling a shift in how these countries navigate their energy dependencies amid global market changes.
