A ferry carrying 116 people has capsized off the coast of Guyana, prompting urgent rescue operations. The MV Barima issued a distress call late Saturday night while en route from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. As of now, 53 individuals have been rescued, but many remain unaccounted for, raising concerns about the safety measures in place.

Authorities have mobilised the coastguard and private vessels to assist in the search. The ferry was reportedly equipped with 250 life jackets and eight lifeboats, yet the circumstances leading to the capsizing are still unclear. This incident highlights potential vulnerabilities in maritime safety protocols in the region.

The Prime Minister has expressed hope for the safe recovery of all passengers, while a medical team is on standby to provide immediate care to those rescued. The ongoing search efforts are crucial not only for the victims’ families but also for assessing the effectiveness of safety regulations governing passenger ferries in Guyana.

As the situation develops, it serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in maritime transport, especially in areas prone to such accidents. The community is rallying together, hoping for positive outcomes as rescue operations continue into daylight hours.
