Oxford’s New Traffic Filter Scheme: What You Need to Know

Oxford is replacing its temporary congestion charge with a traffic filter scheme that imposes £70 fines for violations. This initiative aims to encourage residents to use public transport, cycle, or walk instead of driving through central areas.

The traffic filter will be enforced by automatic number plate recognition cameras at six key points in the city. These cameras will operate during specific hours, and motorists caught breaching the rules will face fines, which can be reduced to £35 if paid promptly.

The council believes this change will further reduce traffic congestion and improve bus reliability, building on the positive impacts observed during the congestion charge trial. Interestingly, a survey indicated that 70% of local businesses felt the previous charge had little to no negative effect on their operations.

As this scheme rolls out over the next 18 months, residents and visitors alike will need to adapt their travel habits, potentially reshaping daily routines and transport choices in Oxford.
