British troops are set to gain a significant tactical advantage with the introduction of rucksack-sized powered paragliders, enabling them to conduct covert missions up to 200 miles behind enemy lines. This innovative technology, developed by Wiltshire-based start-up Blakcro, allows soldiers to launch without the need for runways or aircraft, making it ideal for rapid deployment in challenging terrains.
The paragliders can be assembled in under eight minutes, even in darkness, and are designed to be lightweight and discreet, featuring low acoustic and visual signatures. This capability could revolutionise reconnaissance and special operations, allowing troops to infiltrate areas without conventional aviation support.
With the Ministry of Defence backing this project, Blakcro has received around £6 million in funding, highlighting the UK’s commitment to fostering homegrown defence innovations. The Royal Marines and Parachute Regiment are expected to trial these systems soon, potentially reshaping operational strategies in modern warfare.
