New Passport Rules Leave Family Stranded Abroad

A family from Edinburgh faced a distressing 12-day ordeal in Italy after being denied boarding due to new passport regulations. The changes, effective from February 2026, require dual nationals to possess a British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement to return to the UK. This unexpected requirement caught the family off guard, especially regarding their four-year-old son, who only held an Italian passport.

The parents, both Italian nationals with settled status, believed they had complied with residency rules. However, they were unaware that their child, despite being a British citizen, needed specific documentation to travel. This lack of communication from the Home Office not only caused significant stress but also incurred over £2,000 in additional expenses, highlighting the financial strain on families navigating complex immigration laws.

Marika Verroca, the mother, expressed frustration over the invasive nature of the emergency travel document application process, questioning why such detailed information was necessary for a child deemed British. The incident raises concerns about the clarity of government communications regarding citizenship and travel requirements, particularly for dual nationals.

The Home Office has stated that guidance on these changes has been available since October 2024, yet the family’s experience underscores the urgent need for a more proactive information campaign to prevent similar situations. As families prepare for travel, understanding these rules is crucial to avoid unnecessary complications and costs.
