Perception of Rising Crime in Western Europe Despite Declining Rates

A recent YouGov survey reveals a striking disconnect between public perception and actual crime statistics in Western Europe. Despite a significant decline in overall crime rates since the mid-1990s, many respondents across six countries, including the UK, believe crime is on the rise. This perception persists even as murder rates have plummeted, with countries like Italy seeing a drop from nearly 2,000 murders in 1991 to just over 300 in 2024.

In the UK, 66% of respondents feel that crime is increasing, contrasting sharply with the reality of falling crime rates. This belief is compounded by high-profile incidents of gang violence and drug-related crime, which dominate media narratives and overshadow the broader trend of safety improvements. The survey highlights a worrying trend where fear of crime may influence public behaviour and policy, despite statistical evidence suggesting a safer environment.

Interestingly, trust in national police forces remains relatively high, with Denmark leading at 74%. However, in the UK, only 43% express confidence in their police, indicating a potential crisis in public trust that could affect law enforcement effectiveness. The survey also reveals that perceptions of specific crimes vary significantly, with many Britons uniquely concerned about knife crime compared to their European counterparts.

Experts suggest that the visibility of certain crimes, particularly those linked to drugs and violence, creates a skewed perception of safety. As crime rates continue to decline, addressing public misconceptions will be crucial for fostering a more accurate understanding of safety and security in society.
