Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, is at the centre of a phishing scam targeting citizens. Fraudsters are sending emails and WhatsApp messages, falsely claiming to require individuals to sign confidentiality agreements in his name. This alarming trend highlights the growing sophistication of cybercriminals who mimic official communications to deceive the public.

The Portuguese government has lodged a complaint with authorities, signalling the seriousness of the issue. The National Cybercrime and Technological Crime Unit (UNC3T) has been proactive, issuing warnings to citizens about these scams. Such phishing attempts are not only a breach of trust but also pose significant risks to personal and financial security.

As these scams proliferate, they underscore the need for heightened vigilance among the public. Individuals must be cautious about unsolicited communications, especially those requesting sensitive information. This incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities in digital communication and the importance of verifying the authenticity of requests.

In a digital age where personal data is increasingly at risk, this phishing campaign could have broader implications for public trust in government communications. Citizens are urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to help combat this rising threat.
