A Metropolitan Police officer has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of a pregnant woman in a high-speed crash. Mariam Ahmed, 38, died after her car was struck by a police vehicle travelling at approximately 50mph in a 30mph zone in Eltham, south-east London.

The incident occurred on 17 October 2024, when PC Chris Johnson, who was driving the police car, and former officer Danny Tomkins, who was driving another police vehicle, were reportedly engaged in a pre-planned operation. Both officers allegedly exceeded speed limits and drove recklessly, with Tomkins overtaking Ahmed shortly before the collision.

The case has drawn attention to police driving practices and the accountability of officers during operations. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating, highlighting concerns about public safety and police conduct in high-pressure situations.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications for police policy and public trust in law enforcement are significant. The next hearing is scheduled for 8 January, where further developments in this tragic case will be closely monitored by the community and legal observers alike.
