Potential Legal Action Against Huntsman Polyurethanes Over Toxic Emissions

Huntsman Polyurethanes, a plastic manufacturer in Teesside, is under scrutiny for emitting benzene, a carcinogenic chemical. The Environment Agency is considering legal action for potential breaches of environmental permits, which could have serious implications for local health and safety.

The emissions have reportedly increased from 13 tonnes in 2022 to 17 tonnes in 2024, raising concerns among campaigners about the risks posed to workers and the surrounding community. Benzene exposure is linked to severe health issues, including leukaemia, and there is no safe level of exposure according to the World Health Organization.

Despite Huntsman’s claims of compliance with permit conditions, the Environment Agency’s findings suggest significant breaches of air quality standards. This situation highlights the vulnerabilities in regulatory oversight and the potential for long-term environmental damage if proactive measures are not taken.

Experts are calling for immediate monitoring of benzene levels in the community to assess the true impact on public health. The slow response from the Environment Agency has raised alarms about the effectiveness of current environmental protections and the need for stricter enforcement to safeguard local residents.
