This summer is set to see the busiest travel period in four years, with an estimated 14.1 million motorists hitting the roads for holidays and day trips. This surge is the second-highest since tracking began in 2016, only surpassed by the post-pandemic rush in 2022. With schools in England and Wales breaking up soon, families are opting for UK holidays due to rising costs and potential travel disruptions abroad.
The RAC has identified Saturday as the peak day, with 3.8 million journeys expected. Drivers should anticipate heavy congestion, particularly in the south-west and north-west of England. Key traffic hotspots include the M1, M25, and M60, where delays are likely.
Additionally, fuel prices are significantly higher than last year, adding to the financial strain on families. Filling a typical family car now costs nearly £9 more for petrol and over £21 for diesel compared to last summer. This increase may further encourage domestic travel as families adjust their budgets.
Moreover, the new EU Entry Exit System is causing delays for UK travellers, with long queues reported at key points like Dover and St Pancras. As families prepare for their journeys, they are advised to plan ahead, travel at off-peak times, and stay hydrated during potentially hot weather.
