As the strongest El Niño event in a generation approaches, UK households are being advised to stock up on food supplies. Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle warns that this climate phenomenon could lead to more extreme storms, impacting food availability and prices. The National Audit Office has highlighted vulnerabilities in the food supply chain, exacerbated by cyber-attacks and climate change, urging the government to enhance resilience.

The NAO report indicates that the UK is less prepared for emergencies compared to other European nations. Households are encouraged to take proactive measures, as disruptions could leave vulnerable populations struggling to access food. Dame Angela Eagle emphasizes the importance of being resilient, suggesting that having a food stock can provide essential support during emergencies.

The government plans to unveil a strategy by the end of 2026 to improve emergency preparedness, drawing lessons from countries like Finland and Sweden. This strategy aims to bolster the UK’s food supply resilience against climate-related disruptions and cyber threats.

Experts warn that the combination of El Niño, global shipping issues, and cyber threats could push the UK food system to its limits. The Cold Chain Federation’s chief executive stresses the need for households to prepare, indicating that sensible stocking is advisable as the government prepares to issue guidance on emergency readiness.
