Pride Marches Highlight LGBTQ+ Struggles in Romania and Bulgaria

Tens of thousands gathered in Bucharest and Sofia for Pride events, demanding equality in countries where same-sex marriage and civil partnerships are not recognized. Despite being EU members, Romania and Bulgaria rank last in LGBTQ+ rights, reflecting a deeply conservative society resistant to change.

The marches come amid rising hostility towards LGBTQ+ communities, with anti-Pride rallies organized by conservative groups. Activists argue that legal recognition is essential for same-sex couples, who currently lack protections for inheritance, medical decisions, and more.

Participants emphasized the need for societal acceptance and legal reforms, highlighting the disconnect between EU human rights standards and local realities. The presence of counter-protests underscores the ongoing cultural clash, as traditional values are fiercely defended by some segments of society.

As these events unfold, they reveal the urgent need for dialogue and policy change in Romania and Bulgaria, where LGBTQ+ individuals continue to fight for basic rights and recognition in a landscape marked by prejudice and fear.
