Primark is taking a significant step into the online shopping arena by launching a home delivery service in the UK. This move comes four years after the retailer first ventured into e-commerce, initially offering a click-and-collect service that required customers to visit stores to pick up their purchases.
The introduction of home deliveries is aimed at boosting sales, particularly after Primark reported a decline in sales linked to recent hot weather. By acquiring a fulfilment facility in Sheffield, the retailer is positioning itself to better compete with fast-fashion rivals like Shein and Boohoo, as well as alternative platforms such as TikTok Shop.
Despite a projected 1% growth in UK sales for the fourth quarter, Primark faces challenges with a forecasted 3% drop in like-for-like sales. The delayed launch of autumn/winter clothing due to summer heat has also impacted trading, although sales improved as temperatures cooled.
As Primark prepares to separate from its parent company, Associated British Foods, the new home delivery service could be a crucial strategy for attracting customers and enhancing profitability in a competitive market. This shift may change shopping habits, making it easier for consumers to access Primark’s offerings without visiting physical stores.
