Private Security Guards Deployed Amid Asylum Seeker Concerns

Essex County Council has initiated a controversial move to deploy private security guards in Braintree, Colchester, and Chelmsford. This decision arises from growing concerns about women’s safety linked to the expansion of the nearby asylum seeker facility at the former RAF Wethersfield base, which is set to increase its capacity by 50%. Currently housing 800 male asylum seekers, the site will soon accommodate up to 1,245 individuals, prompting fears within the community.

Council leader Peter Harris emphasized the need for immediate action, stating that the visible presence of security guards aims to reassure residents and deter antisocial behaviour. The council plans to fund these patrols through local taxpayer money, although the overall cost remains undisclosed. The deployment is part of Operation Vanguard, which will see two guards stationed in each town centre.

Harris has also criticized the inadequate induction process for migrants, particularly regarding their understanding of British cultural norms and acceptable behaviour towards women. This concern is compounded by the daily transport of asylum seekers into nearby towns, raising questions about community integration and safety.

The council’s actions are unprecedented for a local authority in response to an asylum accommodation site. While the contract for the security patrols is initially set for three months, the council is seeking further support from the Home Office to address public service funding in affected communities.
