Protests Erupt in Albania Over Kushner-Backed Resort Plans

In Albania, plans to develop a luxury resort on the island of Sazan, backed by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, have sparked widespread protests. This unrest, dubbed the ‘flamingo revolution,’ reflects deep-seated frustrations with the government and its ties to oligarchs. Protesters argue that the development threatens both their cultural heritage and the local ecosystem, which is home to endangered species.

The protests have drawn thousands, including many from the Albanian diaspora, highlighting a collective anger towards a political establishment perceived as corrupt and disconnected from the people’s needs. Prime Minister Edi Rama, facing calls for his resignation, insists that the €1.4 billion investment is crucial for Albania’s economic future and EU accession.

As bulldozers clear protected areas for construction, tensions have escalated, with confrontations between demonstrators and security forces. Critics warn that the government’s refusal to engage with protesters could lead to more radical actions. The situation is precarious, as the protests challenge not only the resort plans but also the legitimacy of the current government.

The outcome of these protests could reshape Albania’s political landscape and impact its aspirations for EU membership, as public sentiment increasingly demands accountability and transparency from its leaders.
