Protests Erupt Over Asylum Seekers’ Housing Plans in Oxfordshire

A pro-migrant group in Oxfordshire is rallying against government plans to house 1,250 asylum seekers on a former Ministry of Defence site in Bicester. The Oxford branch of ‘Stand Up To Racism’ argues that this move could transform the town into a hotspot for far-right demonstrations, exacerbating tensions and hostility towards vulnerable individuals.

The group claims that isolating asylum seekers in basic accommodation far from amenities will only serve to fuel hate and discrimination. They draw parallels to past incidents where similar proposals led to increased far-right activity, warning that Bicester could become a target for intimidation and violence.

Critics of the plan, including Ian McKendrick, vice-chairman of the group, assert that the funds allocated for this housing initiative would be better spent on expediting the processing of asylum claims. They argue that scapegoating refugees does not address the underlying issues of housing shortages or public service strains.

As the national debate over asylum accommodation intensifies, the government is also proposing that asylum seekers repay housing costs once they are able to work. This controversial approach raises questions about the treatment of asylum seekers and the broader implications for community cohesion in areas like Bicester.
