Protests Erupt in Syria Over Alleged Torture Death

The recent death of Mohammad Ghamira, a former White Helmets volunteer, has ignited widespread protests across Syria. Ghamira, who was arrested on theft charges, died after allegedly being beaten by security forces, raising fears that torture practices persist despite the regime change. Demonstrators in Aleppo and planned protests in Damascus are demanding accountability, echoing sentiments against the oppressive tactics that many believed had ended with the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

Images of Ghamira before and after his detention have gone viral, highlighting the brutality faced by detainees. His family had warned authorities of his medical condition, yet he was subjected to violence while in custody. The Syrian interior ministry has promised an investigation and accountability, but many citizens remain sceptical, recalling the systematic torture that characterized the previous regime.

Rights groups have documented ongoing torture cases, suggesting that the new government, despite its claims, has not dismantled the structures enabling such abuses. Reports indicate that torture methods, including severe beatings and humiliation, continue under the current administration, which is largely composed of former rebel members.

As protests grow, civil society groups are calling for justice not only for Ghamira but for all victims of torture in Syria. The demand for accountability reflects a broader struggle for human rights and dignity in a country still grappling with its violent past.
