Protests Erupt Over Trump-Linked Resort in Albania

Protests in Albania have escalated dramatically as demonstrators clash with police over a controversial luxury resort linked to Donald Trump’s family. The development, which is set to be built in a protected nature reserve, has sparked outrage among environmental activists and citizens concerned about government transparency and corruption.

Since late May, protests have intensified, particularly after construction equipment was spotted on the beaches. The government claims the resort will boost high-end tourism and aid Albania’s EU membership aspirations, but many see it as a threat to the environment and a symbol of political mismanagement.

The situation has become increasingly volatile, with police using water cannons and pepper spray to disperse crowds. This violence marks a stark shift from the peaceful protests that initially characterized the movement, highlighting growing frustration with Prime Minister Edi Rama’s administration.

The European Commission has also weighed in, warning that the project could jeopardize Albania’s EU accession if it fails to adhere to environmental standards. As tensions rise, the outcome of these protests could have significant implications for both Albania’s political landscape and its international relations.
