Puerto Rico Faces Water Rationing Amid Severe Drought

Puerto Rico is implementing water rationing measures in major cities, including San Juan, as a severe drought grips the territory. Starting Friday, over 180,000 residents will experience 48-hour water outages on a rotating basis. Governor Jenniffer Gonzalez has expressed uncertainty about the duration of these measures, attributing the crisis to extreme weather conditions.

The drought has been exacerbated by record-breaking heat, with July marking the driest month in over a century for San Juan. Meteorologists predict that dry conditions will persist, with rainfall expected to be significantly below average in the coming weeks. This prolonged drought is not just a recent development; many communities have faced water shortages for months, raising concerns about the impact on vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and those with health issues.

In response to the crisis, large trucks will distribute potable water, prioritising hospitals and residences for older individuals. However, the lack of investment in water infrastructure has been a longstanding issue, as highlighted by San Juan’s mayor, who previously sued the Water and Sewer Authority over inadequate services. The situation underscores the urgent need for systemic improvements in Puerto Rico’s water management.

As the drought continues, the implications extend beyond immediate water access, affecting public health and daily routines. The United Nations has warned that climate phenomena like El Niño could increase the frequency of such crises globally, signalling a need for proactive measures to address climate resilience and infrastructure investment.
