Putin’s Threats: A New Wave of Hybrid Warfare

European leaders are increasingly alarmed by reports that Vladimir Putin is planning significant retaliatory strikes against nations supporting Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has highlighted intelligence suggesting that these attacks could involve hybrid tactics, including drone and missile strikes designed to appear accidental. This strategy aims to undermine NATO’s collective defence resolve, potentially deterring member states from responding decisively to aggression.

The implications of such a strategy are profound. If these strikes occur, they could create a chilling effect on NATO’s unity and response capabilities. Countries may hesitate to support Ukraine militarily, fearing they could become targets themselves. This could embolden Russia, allowing it to escalate its aggression without facing immediate consequences from the West.

Moreover, Tusk warned that the timing of these potential attacks could coincide with political shifts in Europe, where pro-Russian sentiments are gaining traction. This could further complicate the West’s response to Russian aggression, as political leaders may face domestic pressure to pursue peace at the expense of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

As tensions rise, Poland is enhancing its air defences, reflecting the urgency of the situation. The recent drone strike near the Polish border underscores the real threat posed by Russia, not just to Ukraine but to its allies in Europe. The situation remains precarious, with the potential for significant geopolitical shifts depending on how NATO and its members respond to these threats.
