Raids on Scottish Fishing Fleet Highlight Immigration Enforcement Crackdown

Nine individuals were arrested during a series of immigration raids targeting the Scottish fishing fleet, revealing significant issues within the industry. Conducted between July 26 and 30, the operation involved inspections of 34 fishing boats across various ports, including Fraserburgh and Mallaig, in response to allegations of modern slavery and illegal working practices.

The arrests included five Sri Lankan and four Philippine nationals, with the latter group returning home voluntarily. This crackdown is part of a broader government initiative to combat illegal employment, which has seen a notable increase in enforcement actions across the UK, with a 31% rise in visits and a 20% increase in arrests in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year.

The implications extend beyond immediate arrests; companies found employing illegal workers could face fines up to £60,000 per worker. Additionally, new regulations will require gig economy employers to verify the eligibility of their workers, further tightening the grip on illegal employment practices.

With plans to double the Immigration Enforcement budget by 2028/29, the government aims to escalate these operations, potentially leading to tens of thousands more raids. This shift not only impacts the fishing industry but also signals a broader commitment to addressing exploitation in various sectors across the UK.
