A collection of watercolours by William Weston Young, a prominent Welsh ceramicist, is expected to fetch up to £25,000 at auction. Young, who lived in the Neath Valley and passed away in 1847, is celebrated for his contributions to Welsh ceramics, particularly at Cambrian Pottery and Nantgarw China Works.
The album contains 41 original sketches depicting scientifically accurate birds and botanical specimens, showcasing Young’s artistic talent and dedication to nature. Auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones highlights the rarity of these works, noting that Young’s original watercolours seldom appear on the market, making this auction particularly significant for collectors.
Young’s legacy extends beyond ceramics; he was also an inventor credited with creating the modern blast-furnace brick. His influence is still felt today, as many of his works are held in major museum collections, further enhancing the desirability of the upcoming auction.
Scheduled for 27 July in Cardiff, this auction not only represents a chance for collectors to acquire a piece of Welsh history but also underscores the enduring value of Young’s contributions to art and industry in Wales.
