Reading Named Riskiest Cycling Area Outside London

New data reveals that Reading is the riskiest place for cyclists outside London, ranking 11th in Great Britain for cycling safety. In 2024, the town recorded 277 total road casualties, with 80 involving cyclists, highlighting a significant concern for local cyclists.

The analysis by Sigma-HSE indicates that nearly 29% of road casualties in Reading involved cyclists, raising alarms about the safety of cycling in the area. Local cycling advocates have pointed to specific locations, such as the roundabout near the Thames Quarter, as particularly hazardous due to poor infrastructure and disconnected cycle routes.

Reading Borough Council is actively working to improve conditions for cyclists, including regular reviews of problem areas and the introduction of new cycling facilities. However, the effectiveness of these measures may take time to materialise, as the council seeks funding for larger projects.

The Department for Transport plans to invest over £4.5 billion in active travel initiatives by 2030, aiming to enhance safety and accessibility for cyclists. This investment could lead to significant improvements in cycling infrastructure, but the immediate risks remain a pressing concern for residents and cyclists in Reading.
