Recognising Prostate Cancer Symptoms: The Nighttime Warning Sign

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the UK, affecting one in eight men, with the risk increasing to one in four for Black men. A key warning sign that often goes unnoticed is frequent urination at night, known as nocturia. This symptom can indicate that a tumour is pressing against the bladder, reducing its capacity and making it difficult to fully empty.

Consultant urological surgeon Marc Laniado highlights that while nocturia can be caused by benign conditions, it should not be ignored. Other symptoms include a weak urinary stream, urgency, and pain during ejaculation. These signs can be subtle and easily attributed to aging or benign prostatic enlargement, leading to delays in seeking medical advice.

Men should also be aware of less obvious symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, and discomfort in the lower back or pelvic area. These may not be classic indicators of prostate cancer but warrant discussion with a healthcare professional if they persist.

Early detection is crucial for successful treatment outcomes. Men are encouraged to monitor their health and consult their GP if they notice any concerning symptoms, as timely intervention can significantly improve prognosis.
