Residents Urge Action on Traveller Site Expansion Risks

Residents near the UK’s largest traveller site in South Ockendon, Essex, are voicing urgent concerns to Housing Secretary Angela Rayner about potential changes to planning rules. They fear that relaxing regulations could exacerbate issues related to unauthorised encampments, which have already seen significant growth at the Buckles Lane site, now home to over 800 caravans and static homes.

The community is particularly worried about infrastructure strain, citing problems with sewage and fire safety. Local business owners warn that the densely packed caravans pose a serious fire risk, with one resident highlighting the dangers of a potential blaze spreading rapidly through the site. These concerns are compounded by reports of inadequate waste disposal during recent hot weather.

While some residents express fears about the atmosphere around the site, others defend the traveller community, describing them as hardworking individuals. However, the ongoing debate is intensified by government reforms that critics argue may facilitate the establishment of more unauthorised sites.

Official figures indicate a 73% increase in unauthorised traveller caravans in England since early 2020, raising alarms about the adequacy of local governance. Despite the government’s insistence on maintaining council powers to manage unlawful developments, residents remain apprehensive about the future of their community and the potential for further expansion of the Buckles Lane site.
