Reward Offered for Abandoned Monkey Highlights Animal Welfare Issues

A £3,000 reward has been announced by animal charity Peta for information leading to the arrest of the individual who abandoned a common marmoset named Oyster on a London bus. Discovered on a 302 bus in Kensal Rise, Oyster’s plight has raised significant concerns about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners.

This incident comes on the heels of new legislation requiring all primates kept in England to be licensed, which the RSPCA fears may lead to increased abandonments. The case underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and the potential consequences of neglecting animal care.

Oyster was rescued after a bus driver discovered her while clearing a laundry bag from the luggage bay. Following a veterinary check, she has been rehomed at a sanctuary, where she is expected to thrive. The RSPCA has noted that this fortunate outcome was serendipitous, as they were already seeking a companion for another marmoset.

The case serves as a warning about the dangers of abandoning pets and the legal implications that may follow. As awareness grows, it is crucial for the public to understand the responsibilities involved in keeping exotic animals and the potential legal repercussions of neglecting them.
