The Rise of Unpaid Carers: A Hidden Economic Challenge

Every day, around 1,500 Britons are leaving their jobs to become unpaid carers, reflecting a significant shift in the workforce. This trend is driven by the increasing care needs of vulnerable relatives and a decline in accessible state-funded social care services. Over the past two years, more than a million people have made this transition, highlighting the urgent need for policy changes to support these individuals.

The impact of this shift extends beyond personal sacrifices; it poses a substantial economic challenge. The report estimates that the doubling of unpaid carers quitting work over the last seven years has resulted in an annual economic cost of £37 billion to the UK. This figure underscores the importance of addressing the needs of unpaid carers, who are often juggling their responsibilities with financial instability.

Many unpaid carers, like midwife Jacqui Hylton, find themselves in a difficult position, unable to maintain their professional qualifications while providing care. This not only affects their financial security but also leads to a loss of valuable skills in sectors facing shortages, such as the NHS. The emotional toll and isolation experienced by these carers further complicate their situation, making it crucial for society to recognise their contributions.

Carers UK is advocating for stronger employment rights, including a statutory entitlement to paid carer’s leave. As the government reviews employment rights for unpaid carers, the outcomes could reshape the landscape for those balancing work and caregiving, potentially easing the burden on families and the economy alike.
