Rising Antisemitism Leaves Jewish Community Feeling Vulnerable

As the Jewish community in Manchester approaches the anniversary of a tragic synagogue attack, feelings of vulnerability have intensified. Rabbi Daniel Walker of Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation expressed that the situation has worsened since the attack, highlighting a troubling rise in antisemitism and a perceived lack of effective action to address underlying issues.

The attack, which occurred on Yom Kippur in 2025, resulted in the deaths of two men and injuries to others, leaving lasting emotional and physical scars. Despite increased security measures, community members feel that the core problems of hate and violence remain unaddressed, leading to a heightened sense of fear.

Recent statistics reveal a significant increase in violent hate crimes against Jewish individuals, with reports indicating a nearly two-thirds rise since 2022. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for societal change and effective measures to combat antisemitism.

As memorial services are held to honour the victims, the community is not only remembering those lost but also calling for action to ensure such tragedies do not recur. Rabbi Walker’s remarks reflect a collective yearning for safety and a commitment to addressing the root causes of hate in society.
