Rising Genital Herpes Cases Highlight Ongoing STI Challenges in England

Despite an overall decline in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England, new data reveals a concerning rise in genital herpes cases. In 2025, nearly 29,000 diagnoses were reported, marking a 3% increase from the previous year. This trend underscores the persistent issue of STIs, particularly among young people and certain demographics, such as gay and bisexual men.

The rise in genital herpes is significant as it indicates a gap in awareness and testing, especially since many infections can be asymptomatic. Health experts stress the importance of regular STI testing, particularly for those who have had unprotected sex. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns that untreated infections can lead to serious health complications, including infertility.

While the overall STI rates have decreased, the increase in herpes cases suggests that public health messaging may need to adapt to address this specific infection. The decline in chlamydia testing, which fell by 9% in 2025, raises further concerns about undiagnosed infections and their long-term effects on health.

As the landscape of STIs evolves, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant about their sexual health. Access to free and confidential testing services is available, yet awareness and proactive behaviour are key to reversing these rising trends in genital herpes and ensuring better health outcomes for all.
