Portable chargers, or power banks, are increasingly causing safety concerns on flights, according to the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). As these devices become more popular, incidents of overheating and fires are on the rise, prompting the CAA to urge passengers to be more aware of the rules surrounding their use. Notably, power banks must be carried in hand luggage, not checked baggage, to mitigate fire risks.
Recent incidents, including a diverted EasyJet flight due to a power bank in the hold, highlight the potential dangers. The CAA’s Jonathan Nicholson emphasised that these regulations are not arbitrary; they are in place to prevent serious incidents. Passengers are advised to limit themselves to two power banks and avoid using or charging them while on board.
With a reported increase in thermal runaway incidents linked to lithium-ion batteries, the CAA plans to launch a campaign to educate travellers about these risks. A survey revealed that many passengers are unaware of the specific rules regarding battery-powered devices, indicating a need for better communication from airlines.
As travel resumes, understanding these regulations is crucial for a safe journey. Passengers should ensure their devices are in good condition and follow guidelines to avoid disruptions and enhance safety during flights.
