Rising Threat of Online Sexual Abuse Among Youths

A recent UNICEF survey reveals alarming statistics about online sexual abuse, with one in five youths aged 12 to 17 reporting such experiences in the past year. This troubling trend highlights the urgent need for better protection measures in the digital landscape, as many young people navigate social media platforms that often expose them to harmful content.

The report indicates that the majority of perpetrators are known to their victims, challenging the stereotype that online abuse is primarily conducted by strangers. This reality complicates the dynamics of reporting and seeking help, as many victims feel ashamed or unsure about confiding in others. Alarmingly, 41% of those surveyed had never disclosed their experiences to anyone.

Social media platforms, particularly those owned by Meta, are identified as the primary venues for these assaults. The report underscores the responsibility of tech companies to enhance safety features and protect minors from predatory behaviours. As discussions around regulating social media intensify, the findings may influence policy changes in the UK and beyond.

With an age limit for social media accounts set to be implemented in the UK by 2027, this report serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing risks children face online. It calls for immediate action from governments and tech companies to create safer environments for young users, ensuring that their digital experiences do not come at the cost of their safety and well-being.
