Rising Unauthorised Traveller Sites: A Growing Concern

The number of unauthorised Gypsy and traveller sites in England has surged, with recent figures showing a 73% increase since January 2020. This trend is alarming local communities and prompting legal disputes, as many sites are established without planning permission, often during Bank Holiday weekends. Local councils express frustration over a perceived loss of control in the planning system, while residents near these sites report difficulties in selling their homes due to the rapid developments.

Cliff Codona, chair of the National Travellers’ Action Group, argues that the planning system effectively forces travellers to break the law. He describes the challenges faced by Gypsies in securing legal sites, often leading them to covertly occupy land. Codona’s experiences highlight the systemic barriers that contribute to the rise of unauthorised encampments, as many feel they have no other options.

The situation has sparked concerns among local officials, particularly in areas like Basildon, where unauthorised caravans have increased dramatically. Councillor George Jeffery warns that the lack of enforcement may lead to further unrest, reminiscent of past evictions at sites like Dale Farm. As tensions rise, the government maintains that unauthorised developments are unacceptable, yet the reality on the ground suggests a growing disconnect between policy and practice.

This issue raises significant questions about planning laws and community relations, as the increasing number of unauthorised sites reflects deeper societal challenges. The ongoing struggle between local authorities and travellers underscores the urgent need for a more effective and inclusive planning approach that addresses the needs of all communities.
