Risks of Feeding Deer in London’s Parks

Royal Parks has issued a stark warning against the dangerous practice of feeding deer in London, particularly in Richmond and Bushy Parks. Recent footage has shown visitors, including children, approaching and feeding these wild animals, prompting concerns about safety. The Royal Parks spokesman expressed shock at this behaviour, highlighting that deer are large, powerful, and unpredictable creatures. A red stag can weigh up to 200kg, making close encounters potentially hazardous.

The organisation advises maintaining a distance of at least 50 metres from the deer. Feeding them not only poses risks to human safety but also alters the animals’ behaviour, leading them to associate people with food. This can result in deer approaching and pestering visitors, which increases the likelihood of injury.

In a previous warning, park officials noted that the deer are not pets and should not be treated as such. The risks are compounded by the fact that deer can react quickly when startled, making it crucial for visitors to respect their space. Park users are urged to keep food out of sight and to calmly move away if approached by a deer.

This warning serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting wildlife and understanding the potential dangers of interacting with wild animals. The Royal Parks continue to advocate for safe practices to protect both visitors and the deer themselves.
