New Road Safety Initiative Urges Drivers to Slow Down to 10mph

Motorists in South Wales are being urged to reduce their speed to 10mph on certain A-roads as part of a new road safety initiative called Operation Arabis. This initiative, launched by South Wales Police in collaboration with the British Horse Society, aims to enhance awareness around safely overtaking horses on public roads. The operation combines enforcement with education, targeting both drivers and equestrians to reduce the risk of collisions.

The Highway Code advises that drivers should maintain a distance of at least two metres when passing horses and to do so slowly and carefully. This is particularly crucial as horses are among the most vulnerable road users, easily startled by fast-moving vehicles. The initiative highlights the importance of patience and awareness, encouraging drivers to refrain from revving engines or using their horns when near horses.

Recent enforcement exercises have already shown positive engagement, with officers stopping vehicles to provide guidance on safe driving practices around horses. The operation has been particularly focused on areas identified as high-risk for equestrian incidents, using data from the British Horse Society to pinpoint these locations.

By adhering to these new guidelines, motorists can significantly reduce the likelihood of serious accidents, ensuring the safety of all road users. The initiative not only aims to protect horse riders but also fosters a culture of responsible driving in shared spaces, ultimately contributing to safer roads for everyone.
