Romania has officially held Russia accountable for a drone crash in Galați that endangered civilians. The drone, confirmed to be of Russian origin and carrying explosives, landed on a residential building, igniting a fire. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu stated that this incident underscores the risks posed by Russian military actions in the region.
In response, Romania has declared the Russian consul in Constanța persona non grata and is closing the consulate, signalling a significant diplomatic stance against Russia. This move reflects heightened tensions and a commitment to protecting Romanian citizens.
European leaders, including EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have condemned the incident, indicating that it represents a further escalation in Russia’s aggressive behaviour. The EU is preparing a new package of sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow.
NATO has also reacted, condemning Russia’s actions and pledging to bolster defences against potential threats, including drone attacks. This incident may lead to increased military readiness in Eastern Europe, affecting regional security dynamics and potentially impacting UK interests in the area.
