A Romanian F-16 fighter jet has successfully shot down a suspected Russian drone that breached the country’s airspace, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions. This incident, the first interception of its kind since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, underscores the growing risks to NATO member states in Eastern Europe. Romania has experienced numerous drone incursions recently, raising alarms about the potential spillover of the conflict into neighbouring countries.
The drone was detected approximately 20km east of the Black Sea port of Sulina before it crossed into Romanian airspace. The military response involved two Italian Eurofighter Typhoon jets and two Romanian F-16s, with one F-16 engaging the drone over an uninhabited area. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, but the event highlights the increasing frequency of such violations, which have already led to injuries in previous incidents.
This interception comes at a time when NATO officials are expressing heightened concerns about Russia’s aggressive military posture. The European Commission condemned the drone incursions, indicating that they represent a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict.
