Rural School Faces Transport Crisis as Bus Service Ends

Parents at Dunseverick Primary School are grappling with the sudden withdrawal of the yellow bus service, replaced by a taxi just days before the new term. Principal Leanne Smyth expressed her frustration, noting that the Education Authority (EA) failed to account for new students who would require transport, leaving many families in a lurch.

The EA’s decision was based on an assessment that identified only six children needing transport, a figure that did not reflect the actual demand. This oversight has left parents scrambling to find alternative ways to get their children to school, particularly in a rural area where walking is unsafe due to busy roads.

Parents like Lauren Pearson and Cherith McConaghy voiced their disappointment, highlighting the emotional significance of the school bus as a rite of passage for young children. The abrupt change has not only disrupted routines but also added stress for working parents who now face increased time commitments to ensure their children can attend school.

The EA stated that transport routes are reviewed annually to ensure they meet demand and provide value for money. However, the lack of communication and consideration for rural circumstances raises concerns about how such decisions are made and the impact on families relying on school transport.
