Russia’s Elections Amid Growing War Fatigue

As Russia approaches its parliamentary elections, the atmosphere is charged with anxiety and war fatigue. With nearly half of Russians expressing alarm about their surroundings, the impact of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is increasingly felt in daily life. Rising prices, fuel shortages, and the spectre of another mobilization are causing many to reconsider their support for the war, with a significant portion now favouring peace talks.

The elections, set for September 18-20, are the first since the war began, and while the Kremlin is expected to manipulate the results, the turnout will be closely monitored. This election serves as a litmus test for President Putin’s support, as he seeks to demonstrate that the ruling party, United Russia, maintains legitimacy for its war efforts. However, public sentiment appears to be shifting, with many Russians quietly opposing the conflict.

The liberal opposition party Yabloko, which openly opposes the war, has seen a surge in support, particularly among younger voters. Yet, a recent court ruling has barred Yabloko from participating in the elections, raising questions about how citizens can express their discontent. Activists are now urging voters to spoil their ballots or support any party other than United Russia.

As the election date nears, the Kremlin’s ability to quell dissent will be tested. The visible turnout at polling stations could signal widespread discontent with the war, challenging the narrative of unwavering support for the regime. This election may not change the political landscape, but it could reflect a significant shift in public opinion regarding the war in Ukraine.
