A remarkable rescue unfolded when an Army sailing crew participating in the Round Britain and Ireland Race discovered an exhausted barn owl 70 miles from shore. The bird, later named Little Reg, struggled to land on the yacht’s mast before collapsing on deck, prompting the crew to act swiftly.

Sergeant Mark Petherbridge described the moment as tense, noting that the owl kept trying to reach the boat despite its exhaustion. The crew wrapped the owl in a towel to keep it safe and alerted race officials about their unexpected guest. This incident highlights the often-overlooked interactions between wildlife and maritime activities.

Conservation officer James Stannard from the Barn Owl Trust remarked on the rarity of such rescues, emphasizing the crew’s dedication to ensuring the owl’s safe return. He speculated that Little Reg may have been inadvertently carried out to sea while roosting on a fishing vessel.

This heartwarming story not only showcases the compassion of the sailors but also serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by wildlife in maritime environments. The crew’s actions reflect a growing awareness of the need to protect and care for animals in distress, even in the most unexpected circumstances.
