The successful launch of the MTG-I2 satellite marks a significant advancement in Europe’s meteorological capabilities. This satellite, part of the Meteosat Third Generation constellation, will provide high-resolution weather data every 2.5 minutes, revolutionising short-term forecasting and disaster monitoring across the continent.
Located in geostationary orbit, MTG-I2 will enable real-time tracking of atmospheric conditions, allowing for better anticipation of severe weather events such as storms and floods. This capability is particularly crucial as climate change intensifies the frequency and severity of such events, impacting communities and economies.
In addition to its imaging capabilities, MTG-I2 features a Lightning Imager, which will enhance understanding of lightning activity and its relationship to weather patterns.
