New Satellites to Monitor Climate Change Effects

The European Space Agency has successfully launched two satellites aimed at enhancing climate change monitoring. The Sentinel-3C and Flex satellites will provide critical data on environmental changes and their impacts on ecosystems.

The Flex satellite will specifically focus on plant health by measuring the faint fluorescence emitted during photosynthesis. This data will help scientists understand how heat waves affect vegetation, which is crucial for assessing ecosystem productivity and climate resilience.

Meanwhile, the Sentinel-3C satellite will gather information on marine conditions, including temperature and ocean currents, while also monitoring land use. This dual focus aims to optimize agricultural yields and mitigate potential food crises linked to climate change.

With a mission budget of €350 million and a planned duration of three years, these satellites will orbit the Earth 14 times daily, providing timely insights into the ongoing climate crisis. Their findings are expected to play a vital role in shaping future environmental policies and responses.
