A scaffolder’s recent 20-foot fall through a factory roof has raised serious concerns about safety protocols in the construction industry. James Cranswick, 26, was moving materials when he stepped onto a nearly invisible skylight, resulting in a severe injury. The incident, captured on security footage, shows him landing painfully on a pallet truck before hitting the concrete floor, leading to multiple fractures and cuts.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation into the incident, revealing significant lapses by both Clover Access Systems Limited and STM360 Limited. Neither company implemented necessary protective measures to prevent falls from fragile surfaces, violating established safety regulations. This oversight not only endangered Mr. Cranswick but also highlights a broader issue of compliance within the industry.
The HSE’s findings indicate that the risks associated with working on fragile roofs are well-documented, yet these companies failed to adhere to guidelines designed to protect workers. As a result, both firms faced hefty fines totaling £79,300 for their negligence. HSE Inspector Shauna Halstead emphasized that such incidents are avoidable and that enforcement actions will be taken against companies that do not prioritize worker safety.
