Labour MP Catherine Atkinson is turning a legal victory into an opportunity for local students. After the Mail on Sunday published a false claim about her education, Atkinson received a payout of around £5,000, which she has decided to use to fund scholarships for state-educated law students at the University of Derby.
This initiative, named the Catherine Atkinson Future Lawyers Award, will provide £500 annually for at least ten years to first-year law students from Derby’s state schools. Atkinson, who herself attended a state school, emphasises the importance of removing financial barriers in the legal profession, aiming to promote social mobility and inclusion.
The scholarship not only addresses immediate financial needs but also highlights a broader issue within the legal field: the lack of diversity and access for students from lower-income backgrounds. By supporting these students, Atkinson hopes to encourage a new generation of lawyers who can represent diverse voices in the justice system.
As the University of Derby’s vice-chancellor noted, this commitment to social mobility is crucial. The scholarship aims to ensure that talented individuals from all backgrounds have the opportunity to pursue a career in law, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
