School Suspensions in England See First Decline Since Pandemic

For the first time since the onset of the pandemic, school suspensions in England have decreased, with a reported 913,000 suspensions in the 2024/25 academic year, marking a 4% drop from the previous year. This shift is significant as it suggests a potential turning point in addressing the behaviour crisis that has plagued schools since before Covid-19.

Despite this positive trend, the figures reveal that primary schools have seen an increase in suspensions, highlighting a disparity in how different educational stages are managing student behaviour. The rise in primary school suspensions, which reached over 112,000, raises concerns about the underlying issues affecting younger students, particularly those with special educational needs.

The government acknowledges the pandemic’s lasting impact on student behaviour, but Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson emphasises the collaborative efforts of teachers, parents, and the government in fostering improvement. However, experts warn that without addressing root causes such as poverty and mental health challenges, the progress may be short-lived.

As schools adapt their approaches to discipline, including potential changes to suspension policies, the focus will need to remain on early intervention and support systems to prevent exclusions. This evolving landscape in school discipline could have lasting implications for students’ educational trajectories and overall wellbeing.
