Scottish Exam Results Show Rising Pass Rates and Narrowing Attainment Gap

Scottish exam results have revealed a notable increase in pass rates across various qualifications, with over 148,000 learners receiving their results. The National 5 pass rate rose to 79.2%, while Highers and Advanced Highers also saw increases. This year marks a significant achievement for vocational and technical qualifications, with a record number awarded, reflecting a shift towards skills-based education.

The narrowing of the poverty-related attainment gap is another key highlight, although disparities remain. The gap between students from the least and most deprived areas has decreased slightly, indicating progress but also underscoring ongoing challenges in educational equity. Critics argue that despite these improvements, systemic issues such as teacher shortages and school violence persist, impacting student performance.

Education Secretary Màiri McAllan praised the results as a testament to the hard work of students and educators. However, opposition parties have called for reforms, including a shift from high-stakes exams to continuous assessment, to better support learners throughout the academic year.

This year’s results are the first under the new qualifications body, Qualifications Scotland, which was established following controversies surrounding the previous authority. As students navigate their next steps, support services are available to assist with university admissions and vocational training opportunities, highlighting the importance of guidance in this transitional phase.
