Scottish Parliament Reinstates Gender Search for MSPs

The Scottish Parliament is set to restore the ability to search for Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) by gender on its website, following a recent diversity survey. This move comes after concerns were raised about the removal of the gender search function, which some MSPs felt could lead to the erasure of women’s representation online.

As part of the new survey, MSPs are being asked to disclose their sex and trans status, aligning with guidelines from the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission. This information will be published online with the consent of the members, allowing constituents to filter representatives by gender, which is seen as a way to enhance transparency and accountability.

The survey includes questions about whether MSPs identify as trans, with options for various gender identities. Importantly, members can choose not to disclose their information, which would then be marked as ‘undisclosed’. This approach aims to ensure that the data collected is handled sensitively while still providing valuable insights into the gender composition of the Parliament.

The Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body emphasizes that this data collection will assist in conducting a gender-sensitive audit, helping to better understand and improve representation within the Parliament. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to address diversity and inclusion in Scottish politics.
