Serbia’s President Vucic to Resign Amid Protests

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic has announced he will resign within weeks, a decision that follows months of widespread protests against his government. This move is significant as it paves the way for early presidential and parliamentary elections, reflecting the growing discontent among the populace, particularly the youth.

The protests, which intensified after a tragic rail disaster in November 2024, have seen tens of thousands rallying for change. Vucic’s resignation could mark a pivotal shift in Serbian politics, as he has held power for over a decade, consolidating authority through his right-wing Serbian Progressive Party.

Vucic’s announcement comes at a time when public trust in the government is at a low point, with accusations of police brutality and excessive force during protests. His departure may lead to a re-evaluation of political dynamics in Serbia, potentially opening the door for new leadership and policies.

As students plan their own gatherings to demand early elections, Vucic’s resignation could catalyse further political engagement among young Serbians, shaping the future of the country’s governance and its response to public grievances.
