Severe Mental Illness Linked to Early Deaths from Preventable Diseases

Adults with severe mental illness are facing alarming health disparities, dying 15 to 20 years earlier than their peers. This stark reality is largely due to preventable physical conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, which account for a significant portion of early deaths among this population.

Research from the Rethink Mental Illness charity highlights that individuals under 75 with severe mental health issues are nearly five times more likely to die from serious diseases. Factors contributing to this crisis include poverty, poor housing, and lifestyle choices, compounded by a healthcare system that often overlooks physical health in these patients.

The report emphasizes the concept of ‘diagnostic overshadowing,’ where physical ailments are misattributed to mental health issues, leading to missed treatment opportunities. This systemic failure not only exacerbates health inequalities but also reflects a broader societal neglect of mental health.

As the government prepares to release a review on mental health, there is a pressing need for a holistic approach that prioritizes physical health checks and integrated care. Without immediate action, these preventable deaths will continue to rise, underscoring the urgent need for change in how mental health is addressed in the UK.
